The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to collaborate with relevant agencies of Government to ensure that all orphanage centres are registered as well as ascertain the safety of the children in the Centers.

It also asked the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to regularly monitor and review the operational activities of orphanage operators and mandated the Committee on Women Affairs to ensure compliance.

These decisions were a sequel to the adoption of a motion moved by James Owolabi (APC, Lagos) at plenary on Thursday.

Moving the motion, Owolabi noted that orphanage centres are places where orphans are kept and trained but they are in some cases subjected to various forms of abuse.

According to him, many orphanages centres are not registered which makes it difficult to ascertain the total number of orphans under their custody.

The lawmaker expressed concern that the unregistered orphanage centres are involved in illegal operations such as child trafficking and nocturnal abuse of the orphans.

He argued that: “it is the responsibility of Government to protect the lives and properties of its citizens including the orphans”, and there is a “need to register and monitor the operations of orphanage centres across the country.
