The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded the defection of some lawmakers elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to its fold and other parties.

Naija News reports that aggrieved lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling party have recently left for the PDP, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Labour Party (LP) and others.

Also, at least 20 senators are reportedly ready to leave the APC to PDP and other parties within the next week over alleged marginalisation and other grievances.

Following the gale of defections, APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, met with the APC senators behind closed doors at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Adamu asked each of the aggrieved senators to lay bare their grievances and instructed that the lawmakers put them into writing.

Reacting to the development, the opposition PDP described the defections of the APC lawmakers as a welcome development.

In a chat with The Punch, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, said the defections showed that the citizens would now have lawmakers that are ready to serve them.

Ologunagba stated that the opposition PDP is the only hope for the people, adding that the party hopes that more lawmakers will still join.

He said “What happened today is a welcome development; it shows that Nigerians will begin to have legislators that will formulate laws that will change the narratives of insecurity, lack of employment and a purposeful representation. It shows that the party is the only hope for the people. We are hoping that more will still join our party.”
