Some former members of the National Assembly from the South-West have rejected the calls for the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu.

Naija News reports that the PDP South-West Forum of Former Parliamentarians made this known in a statement issued on Sunday by its Interim Coordinator, Yemi Arokodare.

The former lawmakers said Ayu’s resignation would further cause imbalance and instability within the PDP, which might affect the party in the 2023 general elections.

The forum was reacting to the call made by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State during a recent South-West stakeholders’ meeting with the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in Ibadan.

Speaking at the meeting, the Governor said Ayu must tender his resignation for the party to move forward, adding that someone from the South West must occupy the PDP chairmanship seat to prove the region’s inclusion in the party’s processes.

According to the former lawmakers however, Ayu should be allowed to remain in office till after the 2023 general elections, stating that they would continue to support the embattled National Chairman.

The forum urged members of the PDP across the zone to shelve personal interests and work for the success of the party in the forthcoming elections

The lawmakers, however, commended Atiku for his recent meeting with the party’s stakeholders in Ibadan, and also appreciated Governor Makinde for hosting the meeting.

The statement partly read, “We wish to appeal to all the South-West leaders to tarry a bit on their request that the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, should step down as part of measures to address the lingering crisis in the party.

”The current crisis in the PDP may further cause imbalance and instability within the party if allowed to linger.

“While acknowledging the concerns raised by the PDP leaders and stakeholders at the meeting on the need to ensure fairness and equity in the party structure, we noted the merit for inclusiveness of South-West within the party but we plead that this should come after the election.
