Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Sunday 2nd October 2022.

The PUNCH: Renewed efforts by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to resolve the lingering crisis between him and the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, failed again as their Thursday meeting could not resolve the crisis. Sunday PUNCH gathered that the governor insisted there that would be no peace deal until the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, resigned his position.

The Guardian: Amid pomp, Nigerians trooped out enmasse across the country yesterday to celebrate the nation’s 62nd independence anniversary, with leaders on various fronts praying for national rebirth and expressing hope for a greater nation. At the Eagles Square in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Service Chiefs, members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and members of the Diplomatic Corp attended a special National parade amid tight security to mark the occasion.

This Day: The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has said that the 2023 general election has again presented to Nigerians another rare opportunity to take back the country from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he said has failed the people. To commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day, millions of Obi’s supporters yesterday poured out into the streets of Lagos, London, Kaduna, Bauchi, Abia, Edo, Akwa Ibom, and Warri en masse, in solidarity with his presidential ambition.

The Nation: Stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are worried by alleged offer of the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to certain individuals and the Southeast by the PDP flag bearer in the February 2023 presidential race, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Party chieftains, especially in the Southeast and Southwest, are said to be displeased with the former vice president for allegedly taking it upon himself to decide who will fly the party’s ticket in 2027 in the event that he (Atiku) wins the next polls.

Daily Trust: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the nation’s registered political parties must disclose the sources of their campaign funds and keep to the rules guiding campaign financing and spending limits. The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this in an exclusive interview with Trust TV. The interview will air on the TV channel at 7 pm tomorrow (Monday).
