‘It Will Not Be Fair’ – PDP BoT Chair Opens Up On Having Northern Presidential Candidate, Party Chairman

    Aug 22, 2022

The chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin has revealed that the party is working on addressing the perceived imbalance brought about by the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

Jibrin argued on Sunday that for the PDP to have its national chairman and its presidential candidate from the same region is an issue that needs to be critically considered.

He however added that a committee is already working on it and steps will be taken to address the situation once the committee submits its report next week.

Naija News reports he made the position known while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics amidst the calls for the removal of Iyorchia Ayu as the PDP National Chairman.

As things stand currently, the PDP Bot Chairman, its National Chairman and the party’s presidential candidate are all from the north, a development which has unsettled some stakeholders within the party.

Speaking on the situation, Jibrin said the PDP national caucus, BoT and the national executive committee are all waiting for the recommendation of the committee set up to look into the matter before scheduling their own meeting to take decisions.

If needed, Jibrin said he can resign from his own position to guarantee peace in the party.

To tell the truth, it will not be fair for the president of Nigeria to be from the north, the chairman of the party from the north and the BoT chairman from the north,” he said.

“By next week we will get the report. And when we find out that somebody is wrong in what has happened we will come up openly to tell the party that it is wrong. Whatever we can do, we will do it in the interest of the party to make the party remain as PDP.”
