Defection Plan: Wike Keeps Mum Over Meeting With Umahi

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has kept mum on his recent meeting with his Ebonyi State counterpart, Dave Umahi.

Recall that on Saturday, governor Umahi arrived in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers state capital and met with Wike at 9pm in what is called “a friendly and brotherly visit”.

Umahi’s visit makes it the first meeting with Wike after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020 following an alleged dissatisfaction with the party.

The Ebonyi governor had claimed that he dumped the party over an alleged injustice meted out to the South East region by the PDP.

Reacting to Umahi’s claims, Governor Wike accused his colleague of lying against the PDP and creating the impression that the opposition party was unjust and unfair.

Wike claimed that Umahi was angry with the PDP for choosing Peter Obi as the running mate to the party’s 2019 Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The two governors have been engaged in a war of words since Umahi’s defection to the ruling party.

It is, however, surprising to see Umahi visit Wike weeks after he first lost the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP to Abubakar and then days after he lost the running mate slot to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Rumours have emerged that Wike may be set to dump the PDP for the APC, but the governor’s spokesman, Kelvin Ebiri last Wednesday disclosed that his principal will never dump the opposition PDP.

However, as of the time of filing this report, Wike has yet to issue a statement regarding his meeting with Umahi over the weekend and the rumours that he is planning to dump the PDP for the APC.
