    Buhari Expresses Sadness Over Death Of 76 Persons In Anambra Boat Accident

    President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of 76 persons in a boat accident in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    Naija News reported that seventy-six people drowned and nine passengers were rescued after a boat ferrying 85 passengers capsized on Saturday.

    It was gathered that the boat took off from Onukwu bridge and was heading to Nkwo market in the Ogbakuba area of the state when it submerged.

    In a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, Buhari directed relevant government agencies to aid the rescue mission of the remaining victims.

    The Nigerian leader also called for the enforcement of safety protocol on boats across the country to avoid a repeat of such incidents in the future.

    President Buhari, therefore, condoled the families of the victims of the boat accident, the people and the Government of Anambra state.

    The statement reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday expressed sadness over the boat accident in Anambra state, in which dozens of people were killed.

    “The boat reportedly carrying 85 persons capsized following rising floods in Ogbaru area of the State, with emergency bodies confirming a death toll of 76.

    “Following the tragedy, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority and the National Emergency Management Agency have embarked on rescue and recovery missions expeditiously.

    “As more details are awaited, the President has directed all other rescue & relief agencies to rush to the site of the accident. He also directed the relevant government agencies to check the safety protocols on these Ferries to make sure such incidents are avoided in the future.

    “President Buhari said he was saddened by the boat accident and directed that all possible efforts be made to account for all the passengers.

    “The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for everyone’s safety, as well as the well-being of the family members of the victims of this tragic accident.”

    Naija News reports that the incident is the fourth time a boat will capsize in the second quarter of 2022.
