The senator representing Adamawa North, Ishaku Elisha Abbo, has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senate President Ahmed Lawan read Abbo’s letter communicating the defection at the plenary on Wednesday.

Abbo in the letter said his defection was informed by the mismanagement of the PDP in Adamawa State by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, which he noted had led to disaffection in the party.

He said he was joining the APC to join President Muhammadu Buhari in building a better nation.

In the letter entitled “Movement of God’s people from the PDP to the APC”, Abbo said his defection took immediate effect.

“Mr Senate President Sir, it is worthy of note that in the history of Nigeria’s nascent democracy, specifically from 1999 till date, no President has paid attention to the welfare of Nigerian Citizens like President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

He listed the packages to include Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), Homegrown School Feeding Programme (HGFP), Tradermoni, Marketmoni, Farmermoni and N-Power.

But reacting, the PDP said Abbo should be ready to vacate his seat in the Senate because the party would not allow him to run away with the mandate.

Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP national publicity secretary, said the party had commenced a process to replace him in the Senate.

“He is fully aware of the constitutional implication of his decision to defect to another party, which is that he cannot continue to occupy the seat of the PDP in the Senate,” Ologbondiyan said.

“The place of any senator who changed parties except on the grounds provided by the Constitution is very clear and the PDP will not allow Senator Abbo to run away with our mandate. It is impossible.

“Our party had already commenced processes for his replacement with a credible, stable and acceptable person, to take over his seat in the Senate,” he said.
