2023: Outgoing Governors May Get Automatic APC Senate Tickets

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reportedly approved automatic senate tickets for outgoing governors, who have declared their senatorial ambition.

According to Daily Sun, the APC NWC may not grant return tickets to over 70 percent of incumbent APC Senators and members of the House of Representatives who have indicated interest to re-contest.

However, it was learned that the lawmakers have mounted pressure on Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, to prevail on the Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC to give them the right of first refusal.

Instead, it was gathered that the party’s national chairman has given more powers to governors to exercise full control of APC structures in their various states.

Speaking with the newspaper, An APC Senator said in states where APC has serving governors, the fates of lawmakers’ return will be determined by them.

The lawmaker added that former governors in states where APC is not in charge may likely determine who gets the party’s tickets at various levels.

The APC chieftain listed Niger, Plateau, Jigawa, and Kebbi as key states where outgoing governors would likely displace current senators.

Recall that Lawan and Gbajabiamila had separately appealed to APC leadership to grant automatic tickets to ‘performing’ members of the National Assembly.

Speaking at the APC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting two weeks ago, the party’s chairman stated that governors were the leaders of the party in the states.

Adamu asked former governors to recognise that the serving governors are the leaders of the party and stop the battle of ego.

However, APC spokesman, Felix Morka, said the APC NWC has not discussed the issue of granting automatic tickets to outgoing governors.

He confirmed that Lawan and Gbajabiamila asked the party leadership to grant return tickets and the right of refusal to outstanding lawmakers.

Morak, however, stated that only issues itemised in the published election guidelines of the party were valid for now.

The APC has not discussed such an issue. The NWC is yet to do that. All the issues we have raised are contained in the party guidelines, recently published,” he told Daily Sun.
