The Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has denied claims that his principal received campaign funds from Nigerians in the diaspora.

Naija News reports that Okupe was reacting to a report that some Labour Party (LP) members were at loggerheads with the party’s candidate, Peter Obi, over the diversion of campaign donations.

During an appearance with Channels Television on Sunday night, Okupe said the former Governor of Anambra State did not receive any donation from his supporters abroad during his tour in August.

The former presidential aide said Obi did not travel abroad to raise funds for his campaign, stressing that fundraising was not the primary purpose of his visit.

Okupe said Obi’s primary intention is to sell himself to some of the major stakeholders in the diaspora who have a lot of influence back in the country.

He said: “I’m the director-general of the campaign. I’m also a Christian. I will not lie to you. He (Obi) went abroad about four or six weeks ago, we did not collect any money.

“Not that we are against raising money from Nigerians in diaspora, that was not the primary intention.

“The primary intention is for the candidate to sell himself to some of the major stakeholders in our communities who have a lot of influence back home on the Nigerian communities. That was the aim and we have achieved that.”
