The leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo has declared that the northern region plans to hold on to power in 2023.

The elder statesman made the declaration on Monday where he added that the plans of the northern politicians is to cause division and confusion among the southerners so the north can retain power in 2023 when the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari expires.

Speaking at the Greater Nigeria Conference (GNC) in Abuja, Pa Adebanjo however insisted that it is the turn of the south to produce the next Nigerian president.

He also chided politicians who are opposed to zoning in 2023 because it doesn’t favour their region, arguing that if not for zoning, some politicians of northern extraction would never have become president.

The Afenifere leader said Nigeria is at crossroads and the 2023 election is a time to say the truth and stand by the truth.

He said, “Let’s tell Nigerians where it should be and stop deceiving ourselves. We are now at a crossroads. My position is to say it as it is.

“The North does not want to yield power and the only thing they know is to divide the South so that they can have power in 2023. They want to divide the South West first. Now that is the turn of the South East, they (North) are now talking of competence, merit.”

Speaking further, Chief Adebanjo urged southern politicians who do not belong to the southeastern subregion to also shelve their presidential ambition, arguing that in the spirit of fairness and justice, it is the turn of the southeast to produce Nigeria’s next president.
